I have a 1969 f 100 with a 360. Recently it has developed a valve tap problem that only occurs once in a while, the truck can run for 2 wks no problem then all the sudden they will start tapping, (drives me nuts) they may only tap for one hr. or sometimes for one day and then they stop. Motor has no knocks and consitent 40 psi at 2000 r's When they start tapping, they will do it for the rest of the day, but the next morning the truck will be quiet with no tap. I have noticed the it does not do it early in the morning, but now that summer is here it is doing it more. I recently went to a 5w-40 synthetic oil rated for high temp motors, could this be the problem. Any advise would be welcome
IMHO, yes that is at least part of the problem. The possibility of a cheap oil filter also. Synthetic oil can break the ring seal and cause it to burn oil also. Unless you've only got 10000 miles on a rebuilt engine. I would put some seafoam brand additive in the oil to clean out the passages. Let it idle for 15-20 minutes. Then change the oil and filter with 15W-40 Diesel oil and a good oil filter like a Ford Motorcraft. There has been guys on here stateing FE's need the Zinc in the Diesel oil. I personally had a Pontiac engine way back in the day that Diesel oil is the only thing that kept the lifters quiet.
I would not run a lighter oil than 10W-30 in any older engine, just because of the wider tolerances,...not because the engine is old, but because the factory tolerances were wider than new engines are.
I use Seafoam regularly, but to stabilize my fuel,...I'd sure be willing to use it in the oil to clean the engine, as I trust it to do what it says it will!
My 360 taps a bit on startup if not run regularly, but immediately quiets. I expect that of the older engines, but it should not tap for any period of time, otherwise you should be concerned with wear to the lifters/rockers.
I hope this helps,
Todd.
