hi everyone,
i'm having some issues with my alternator. after a cold start the battery needle goes crazy for a couple of seconds and it always takes a couple of minutes to charge my batteries completely.
It also make a squealing sound so i figured i need to change it.
My questions are:
- rebuild vs new. is it worth the cost?
- do they come with the same pigtail? with the Regulator? or i have to change the harness?
i'v changed the belt not long ago after replacing the a/c, p/s bracket, tensioner and idler pulley. preatty sure it's the right size and it's tight enough.
how do i test my batteries?
LOAD test. Either buy a load tester (they're cheap at Harbor Freight), or take to your FLAPS. ISOLATE the batteries first (disconnect one of the negatives). Otherwise, you'd be load testing the two together, which provides no meaningful information.
Sounds like you have a serp belt truck. If it's squealing, there's still something wrong belt-wise. Tensioner is weak, belt is too long, excessive resistance on one of the other accessory pulleys, foreign substance on one or more of the pulleys, something like that.
See if the gauge movement (is it a voltmeter or an ammeter in your year of truck?) coincides with the glow plug / WTS light.
