I am having trouble trying to remove the starter on my 1987 F250 with a 6.9L and I am having trouble getting to the top bolt. Does anyone have an easier way to get to and remove it? Thank you in advance I am really in a pickle here. By the way I have to do this in my driveway so I don't have a lift.
ratchet, socket, and a lot of extensions.
i really cant give you more than that except to say once you get it out, it goes back in with no problems once you put the new starter on.
yeah you need just the right length of socket and extensions so that your ratchet goes on and just clears in the spacing.if your too short, the starter body will be too long.if your too long with the extensions, then you can't get the ratchet on.find the right combo, and she'll come right out and in.
the 6" + the 3" combined with a deep socket that iv got in a handy kit that i carry with me,is 1" too long.iv got to paw through the extensions in the garage and grab one that's like 5 or 5.5" long to go in place of the 6". once i find just the right one to go with the 3" it lines up my ratchet just clearing the rear of the starter housing, if this helps ya get started.
