problems getting starter off

Any one have any suggestions on how to get the starter off of a 1984 F250 6.9L. I got the two bottom bolts off easily but it looks like I need a torch to get to the last one on top of the starter -- it's way to close to the frame to get a wrench in there. Do I need a special tool?????

Cool starter

you need a half moon starter wrench, it can be done with a 3/8 dr wobble socket and extension, its difficult ether way, but it can be done

Finding the right extension length is the trick.
Also it depends on which style of starter you have.
There are four sdifferent styles that I know of, three Mitsubishi gear reduction styles and one Delco style.
How you go about it is different for each one.

I've replaced starters on the '90 with the smaller starter and the 85 with the larger onethe only way I go is with a real long extension or many shortones starting in the fron of the starter and above it reaching all the way back. remove the top one first so the starter doesn't fall out. on the way back in, put a little grease or vaseline on the socket to hold the bolt for the topone then install the others finger tight, start and tighten the top one then tighten the other two good luck Phil
