I started this thread https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...questions.html in March and made good progress this weekend. The old front assy is out. Only thing thing left is the springs. They would have been out, too, if I knew how to get those darn rear bolts out of the front spring. Looking in Haynes it looks like they should just push out. I beat the living snot out of them with a small sledgehammer and they act like like they are welded in. They do not budge. I also tried turning them with a breaker bar with cheater bar with the same results. What's the secret? Thanks.
Cut them off. I burn the head and tail of the bolt off with the torch, spread the hanger then they fall out with the spring. You need new bushing anyway so...
A smokewrench is the secret! Cut the head and the nut off as close to the hanger as you can get and the pry it out. And it will still be tough. Good luck!
So if you guys were in my shoes, where this is just a yard truck, and without a cutting torch, would you bother with the 350 springs or just put the Dana 60 on the 250 springs?
If there wont be any clearance issues I'm tempted to forget about the springs and gitterdun.
Yes it will clear, but it will RIDE like it's sitting on the FRAME! You can cut the head and the nut off with a die grinder and get it out of the hanger with some effort and pry bars and a good hammer. Even if you have to hire someone with a torch to come and cut it off, it's worth it.
You can cut the head and the nut off with a die grinder
What about an angle grinder with a fresh and skinny wheel. Make your cuts between the spring and the hanger...you might have to cut through some stinky rubber first. Do this on both ends of the bolt, on either sides of the spring. Should fall right out. If you can't get all the way through the bolt you might be able to turn it with a wrench to get some more of it. And may have to change to a fresh wheel to make a deeper cut.
That looks like a good way to loose some hide, hair, and blood! But hey, I've done stuff like that too and it worked. Just wear gloves and safety glasses. Safety first! Seriously, I thing the rubber would grab the blade and send the grinder flying. If you are careful and slow it might work.
Just cut that nut and the end of that bolt off flush with the hanger and the heat might free it up enough to get it out. If that doesn't work, go to the other side, cut the head off the bolt, pry the hanger apart with a chisel and hammer and it should pop out.
I would NOT cut between the hanger and spring. The grinder will catch and bind once you hit rubber. Then also have a smoldering MESS on you, the grinder and everything else.
Cut the head and tail off with the grinder then use a pry bar to spread the hanger and another pry bar to pop the spring out
