I purchased my F250 diesel CC 4X4 and expected to have to put a few bucks into it. It’s used right! But before I go in and have the dealer tell me my problems $$$$ I thought I’d get some good advice on FTE.

When I drive over small bumps, manhole covers, semi-rough, roads, I can feel and hear a thumping type noise under the driver’s side floorboard. It’s a dull thump. I had this once before on another vehicle and it was the rubber bushing on the shock absorber that was wore out, but these shocks look good. I could not find anything that looked loose or broke.
I think the '99's had spring isolators - perhaps someone with a 99 can answer for sure. What they are is like a plastic wedge ( for lack of a better term) that isolates the spring from the frame - look where the front spring bends around and attaches to the frame, front and back. As I recall, the factory ones are orange. Hope that helps.
That is what my truck did and it got worse fairly quickly. It was my ball joints. If that is what it is, call around. I found that the replacement rate varied from shop to shop by more than $400 dollars. Finally found a good mechanic for $600. Good luck and I hope that is not what is wrong!!
I check the ball joints over the past weekend and the passenger side upper is bad and the lowers on its way. The driver’s side was still tight. You think I should do all 4 or wait until the driver side fails. The moogs are fairly expensive do you guys know of a grease-able alternative? Any body ever put the in by themselves?
If you are sure you ball joints are bad, it should be fixed soon. You may be able to extend the life of them by injecting grease via needle into them but its really to late for that. You tires will wear unevenly(inside edge) and cause you to have to replace them prematurely. The job can be done by yourselft if you have some mechanical experience and can follow directions, and of course have the tools. I would not replace all four if only two are bad on the same side, as the good ones may last much longer. When the first one goes bad on the other side it will be time to replace them both at the same time, even if one is still good, as it is much cheaper to do them both at the same time.
I can hold my own when it comes to wrenching, but I always had trouble following directions, as least that’s what my wife always says.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

I agree to only do the bad side (upper and lower now) and do the others when they fail. <o></o>

Do you know if the Haynes Manual for the F250 has detailed directions? Or is there a better book out there.<o></o>
If your truck is equipped with a sway bar up front, check the end links. On my 2001 the bushings went bad and it gave the same symptom. Sounded as though the front end was ready to fall out. Sometimes it can hard to isolate those feels and sounds, so I completely removed the sway bar and then test drove it. That proved to be my problem. Good luck.
yes, i'm not sure if the ball joints are causing your problem as far as thumping butthey need to be addressed. Isn't it nice to get so many opinions and be able to use them to narrow down your options, I would look into every reply that you get just to be sure.
My Chiltons manual did an excellent job guiding me through the process, although I haven't ever looked at at Haynes manual.I would venture to guess they are similar. For my 95 ball joints ran about 50 a piece, and they were greasable(important)
Thanks, and your right, I will check through all the opinions and when I do find the "thump, I will share with FTE what it was. This is an excellent website.
I'm leaving 11/18/04 to hunt northern Wisconsin deer, so I won't do any repairs until early December.
Okay since I was going to start a new thread on something very similiar to the topic I'll post it here. My truck is a '99 CC 4x4 PSD, my thump only comes when braking and not all the time. usually will do it when I am backing out of the drive way, fairly long and steep and the end. Sound come from driverside front, I have read a bunch of other threads checked out everything I could think off. If I brake hard, there is no thump, only sometimes does it thump when I brake slow. I have checked all linkage up from, only thing I haven't done is remove the sway bar. The one thing I think it might be is the front springs, the plastic spacer that is supposed to be between the two leafs is broken on the back of both sides. Any ideas or similar problems you've had I am willing to look into.
