Thumbs up VB Spring Conversion Report

Now that I have completed this job, I thought it might be helpful to list the part numbers for the mounting hardware, some of which took 3 to 5 attempts to order until the correct part number was found by my local Ford parts warehouse. I also added a rear sway bar, 30mm in diameter, at the same time (Ex never had one). Thanks to all here who have recommended this mod, it works.
The Excursion is now stable on bends and turns at highway speed, no more loose weaving feeling out of the rear. Yes, the ride is slightly harsher, but after a week of use to allow the new parts to settle in, I like it better (I don't tow). I used the Excursion specified Edelbrock IAS shocks already on the vehicle. (Fronts list the same for F250)
I measure the height change on all corners between the frame and axle. The result was a height increase in the front of 1 ¾ inch and 1 7/8 inch in the rear. Now, if my BFG tires ever wear out I can go bigger.

What did your swaybar (including hardware) run you? I take it that you used a Ford bar?

Great post, BTW. I'm confident that there will be many who will really benefit from it. Rep points to you.

Thanks Monsta - I sure hope the parts list can save some other member the weeks it took me to get the right factory parts. Yes, the rear bar was the thicker 30mm Ford part, but I got it when I bought the springs, all slightly used from another member as a free-bee. The mounting hardware for it was in the area of $125 to $150. Ford isn't afraid to charge for nuts and bolts, but everything fits right. The inner brackets locate on 2 pins on the outer edges of the axle center section preventing any posible rotation of the bar mount.

The lift that the VB springs resulted in was almost 2 inches, actually I measured an increase in the front of 1 ¾ inch and 1 7/8 inch in the rear.

Dear bucky440. I assume you used the "V" code spring in the rear and the "B" Code inthe front, is this correct.

No. V-codes are front springs. B's are rear springs.

Yes I did. I took a 4 hour highway trip last night and was reminided of how much better the Ex feels now at Interstate speeds than with the stock springs - no more float and wander and with the rear sway bar it corners flat without the old tail wiggle I used to get.

DAH - If I had only read my own post, yes V front B rear (Sure would look funny the other way around).

So you got 2 inchs of lift in the rear from the b code springs, plus you got 3.5 inch blocks for the rear?

That is correct. My understanding is that the 3 1/2 inch blocks were designed to go with the B code rear springs. I think if I used the Ex blocks, there would have been almost no lift and then the front would be high with the V codes on it. (I guess if I left the front stock, that would keep the Ex level)

I had Edelbrocks on when I switched to U code in front and F's (modified with two extra leafs). The Edelbrocks already had 35K miles on them and by 40K they were shot. They are not designed for the new spring height on the front and will give very harsh ride. I changed back to the stock shocks fronts for now and the ride is actually much better. Edelbrock told me height change > 1 inch would not work well for the front shocks.

It always seemed to sit level to me even before the spring change. If anything, there is a very slight rise in the rear but not really noticeable. Its easier to see the rear alminum differential cover now.
