rancho shock question

I got a pair of rancho shocks in a bunch of parts I bought. They look like they've never been installed in anything, but I can push the rods in and it doesn't push back out on either one. To me that means bad shocks, but for both to do it and neither to be installed, it made me wonder if there was some reason for this. Any input?

Shocks are:

Should have push out pressure, that why new ones have a compression keeper strap on them when new.

yeah, that's how I usually test them. How did these fail without ever being installed?

They are probably steering damper shocks.

It's no big deal, I'm just curious. I thought that too mark, but they have eyes on each end, not studs.

I bought some like that for my 78. They told me at the parts store that those after market shocks don't come back out on their own. I had them on for a year or two and didn't perform bad. One set was Rancho and the other was Pro comp.

Who knows, maybe they were blowing smoke up my ******

Interestingly enough, after some internet research it would appear they are good. Apparently Rancho shocks aren't gas filled, and with the design they don't rebound the same. Now I just wish they had a stud at one end so I could use them on something. :P

I think that 78/79 Bronco's use a stud arm that is on a mount plate that is riveted to the frame sort of like like the reg mount bracket on a trucks rear shocks.

I can go look under my parts bronco tomorrow.

There are gas shocks and hydraulic shocks. Gas pushes out. Hyd does not. It just slows the rate of movement. If you pull on them, they will come out, just slow.

I had hydraulic shocks on a lifted E150.
My understanding is they are used for offroad. The amount of travel is longer, and when sitting, there is more arm inside the shock. It slows the compression out and in for a smoother reaction when offroading.
