Hey,
The shocks on my 2000 F250 feel like they are shot by how bad the truck rides, but I want to be sure before I go buying new shocks. If I take them off and look at them should I be able to tell if they need to be replaced? I don't know if they are the original shocks, but if they are they have 81,000 miles on them. BTW they are they Rancho RS 5000 shocks.
If you take them off and can easily collapse them by hand they are probally shot. Move up to some Bilsteins if you need to so you can forget the word Rancho.
Seriously, seriously consider Bilsteins. Or any other "premium" monotube shock.
Rancho 5000's are quite primitive and cheaply made shocks with excessive compression damping and inadequate rebound damping. Bottom shelf technology with a flashy paint job. The RSX is better, but still lagging behind the Bilsteins or Edelbrock IAS.
I once bought a truck with almost brand new 5000's. Threw them away.
