Shock absorber question

I ordered shocks on ebay. They came in and are longer then the shocks i have. They are able to compress enough to fit.The truck i have is an 11/85 it appears these shocks are for 86 and up.Will the longer travel hurt anything, they are just going on my plow truck?

As long as they dont bottom out before you hit the bump stops they should be fine

Have you tried extending your old shocks to see if they are the same. New shocks will extend, they usually have the ends tied together to keep them compressed to fit in the box. Worn shocks usually wont extend on there own at all. I also cant imagine there would be any difference in shocks from 85-86. It is possible you may have shocks for a lifted application of your truck if they truely are too long.
