Fired up the roaster

Having a cookout for the holiday weekend so I fired up the pig roaster just to burn the gunk out of it before the party. Couldn't help but fab up a quick demountable trailer hitch for the AA. Then I couldn't help but bust out the camera to share it with my FTE friends. I found a radiator on CL for 75 bucks, so the guy is gonna ship it to me. He didn't know much about the condition, but it looked ok in the photos. Mine leaks and also seems clogged. I can only run around the property for about 3 or 4 minutes before she overheats. I have plenty else to worry about, so the AA is really a project for the future. I will fill you all in on the progress as I get to it.

Well, it was a great success. About 30 people and the AA was parked in the center of the activity. I've got a few ancient utility trailers that I can now tow around with my new hitch. Maybe our July 4th parade? Better do some brake work first. And the still? What makes you think there isn't one ?

That pair is a good match!
I read somewhere that calgon dish detergent packets will dissolve and loosen rust in the block.May be worth a try, before your "new" rad comes in.

Thanks for the nice comments guys. And Dave, I have been doing a lot of reading about model a radiators. I too heard about the dishwashing detergent, and am planning to try that first and it can't hurt at this point. The newly loosened particles can clog the radiator, but Ill be flushing that out anyhow. The rad that is being shipped is a honeycomb style. I have since read that this would be an aftermarket radiator sold through a supplier like 'Western Auto' or similar. Apparently these can be really hard to clear if they are clogged, so now I'm kind of wondering what I'll get. While both are out, and cleaned and flushed, I will do a flow test like I saw on youtube and see how they flow. If it's clean, I read that honeycomb rads do a great job of cooling. Right now it still will only run a few minutes til it starts to boil. Last night I tried a test and the top tank was scalding hot and the bottom tank was barely warm. Sure sign of clogged radiator. Still eating leftovers from the party. Bratwurst and hashbrowns. (we forgot to serve the 2 large trays of potatoes that were at the bottom of the roaster)....

Great setup! Looks like you have lots of fun around there.
You may want to try running straight vinegar in the cooling system. Let it sit in there for 2 to 3 weeks, then drain and flush out the sludge, there will be alot. I have unclogged several old radiators this way. If the rad is out of the vehicle, lay it on its face with cap on and outlets up, fill with vinegar and let sit for several weeks.

Thanks for all the hints. Well, I saw that honeycomb radiator still for sale on CL. I don't blame the guy for not wanting to pack it up and ship it like he said he'd do. I have the diswasher detergent in there now and will drain it tomorrow after a couple of hot runs. Them maybe the vinegar next. It is so clogged it may need to be rodded out. Or I keep looking, but rather have the straight tube, not honeycomb.
