ignition swap

my van had a pertronix flamethrower ignition and super coil. it was damaged so im converting back to points and condenser. can i use my super coil ? I was told to install a ballist resistor. can someone explain what the ballist resistor is and if i realyl need it in my 66 falcon super van? my motor is a 240 l6 btw.

the ballast resister cuts coil voltage down to between 6 and 8 volts for prolonged points life. if you put straight 12 volts to the points they will work, but need to be changed more often.

Check the voltage at the coil now - with engine running - and you may find you are already running a ballast resistor. The way it worked back then when the key is turned to start, full battery juice goes to the coil for a fatter spark to aid in cold weather. When the key is in run position the voltage is dropped to ~7 volts continuous. Aftermarket high output coils need the full 12+ volts to take advantage of wider plug gaps and work their best.
