Can anyone tell me what the ignition coil resistor is used for? When I connect it as the wiring diagram indicates it get very hot and start smoking.
Thanks
The ignition coil resister or Ballast Resistor is used to drop battery voltage to ~9 v at the points and coil while the engine is running. The resistor is bypassed when cranking the engine to supply full battery voltage for starting.
Most resistors will get hot, but it should not be smoking unless you got some oil or something on it.
The resistor is required to drop the battery voltage down to 9 VDC (or whatever) for normal operation. On startup, the full 12.8 VDC is directed to the coil for a "hotter" spark and quicker starts. Some coils are designed to accept this full 12 volts, but not the OEM part. So, depending on what coil you have installed, you would have to bypass this resistor, it (resistor) should get hot but not smoking?
