i'm still not getting spark from coil.
if i perform a voltage test throughout the primary system, should i get a close reading to 12 volts? from battery to coil to resistor to ignition switch to ignition relay?
i should be looking for a voltage drop somewhere right?

On the primary side you should see voltage at the coil with key in on position. You need to check points for voltage. Need also to check the condenser. Using ohms setting put one lead on the condenser pigtail and one on the body of condenser and should see infinite resistance. If anything else, replace it. do your points spark with key on and points on low lobe(closed) if you physically pull them apart and back together? I'm guessing you have external resistor.
That wire has to stay above ground. Shouldn't be grounded. With a ohmeter, after zeroing it by touching both probes together and using ohms adj, test the primary side of the coil by testing across the primary terminals. You should see 1 ohms resistance. Coils with built in resistance should read 4 ohms. Remove the wires first.
i already know the coil is good. i pulled it from my FE.
i will check for power from dist. side of coil to the points.
i may be losing a good connection there, despite changing points and condenser.
thanks for correcting my misinfo on the wire to distributor being a ground.
the dist. wire to coil had a bad connection.
i replaced wire and got power to points.
i tried firing, no go.
now i get no power on dist side of coil if i hook up wire.
possible short? it does spark at that connection.
Remember, you only have power the that side when the dist. is in correct position ie when the points are opening(is that right?) anyway it is pulses of voltage. Then the coil steps up the volts and sends back to dizzy and on to correct sparkplug via rotor.
merlynr,
thanks for the info. i got power to points and she gets spark to plugs.
it still doesnt fire up. i will double check TDC and check rotor location.
i think she's off a tooth on the distributor/cam.
i was correct, dist. was off a tooth. after a few tries cranking the battery died.
did a 4 hour charge, threw it in and she chugged, coughed flames. moved the dist. a little more, she fired right up! timing still needs to be set, but it runs smoothly.
thanks for your help.
there will be more later as i dig into this truck.
Hi have a problem tried to start my f100. 272 engine but there is o spark coming out the coil don't know if I did not do the wiring right. Or has to see with distributor or points I'm new with y blocks need help have xternal resistor any advice will help thanks
