It is known as the Ford 3.03. I don't know how it compares to the 4 speed toploader for strenght. I think the 4 speed may be stronger.
Strength is = to the 4-speed. As long as the teeth are in good shape the only other thing is listen to the countershaft bearings when in 1st or 2nd gear. If quiet, then it is in good shape. the counter shaft bearings do go out over time ( 200,000+ miles). This tranny is fine for what you want to do.
thanks for all the help and info the best help has come from this site so far. tell me if im right on this one. from the decode the main case looks to be a 68 Galaxie and the tail 68 mustang the good number on the tail is C8ZR. so my question is. is this right or do u think this is a rebuilt tranny some time in its life
I don't know about the numbers. The 4 speeds had different tail housings for shifter mounting in different cars. I am not aware of the 3 speed having this characteristic.
Don't worry about the different numbers. These trannys were assembled from the parts that were current at the time. A part designed...lets say in 1968 (C8xx) would stay in use with that number until a design change was created, sometimes for years.
Your numbers indicate parts from '65 and '68, and some of these three speed parts were used well into the '70's.
Could it have been rebuilt? Sure, but it's highly likely that only internal parts were changed, unless case parts sustained some kind of damage, and even then they were probably replaced with similar casting numbers. I wouldn't put one of these into a resto show car, as I doubt the 460 ever came with a 3.03 (or a 460 in a '93 Mustang for that matter) but it is one tough tranny.
