Tranny ID needed
I know the casting date codes, my question is what tranny is it? IE: what does Ford call it.
And as I said earlier it is a top loaded side shifter.
I cant find that case ID in any Hollanders and I couldnt read the tag. Now Im wondering if it may be an early 4spd.
Guess Ive got to go back out in the mud tomorrow and try and read the tag.

Carl,
Call 'Just Sticks' in Sun Valley, CA. The previous owner of my '59 had them place a very similiar-sounding tranny in it. Scoup was it was the 'best' 3spd that would fit.
The C3AR 7006-B casting definitely is a 63-64 vintage Ford tranny, not a Borg Warner 'T-whatever' or New Process 'NP-whatever', . Mine has a 9 bolt top cover, side shifter arms, 9-3/8" long case, 18-1/2" long tailshaft. If you look at the face it has the 'narrow'/'V8-5 bolt' bolt pattern (5-1/4" across the top, 6-3/8" across the bottom, 7-1/4" down both sides). The input shaft is the HD 1-3/8" used by all pickups and some FE full size cars, has close to a 7" stickout, and the front bearing retainer is 4-11/16".
Does this describe your tranny? I don't know what the 'official' designation for this tranny is. If you find out what it was called, please clue me in also.
Adios,
Brett
PS. I wish 1st was a little lower, but it's not a bad tranny.

Carl,
I just climbed under my truck and wrote down the numbers:
Tag: HEF- AD
035225
Casting: C3AR-7006-E
4013
Apparently Ford changed the front of the trannies in '65, making the '64 model trannies the last that were a bolt-in for y-block and 215-223-262 pickups.

Now you KNOW Im gonna have to trudge thru the mud and try and read the tag tomorrow dontcha Brett?
Yours is an interesting one according to Hollanders.
Its a 64 F100 & F250 128" wb application only and it has a 2.59 1st gear. Ford offered a 2.79 in most apps so yours has a nice close spread.

The 223 used the 2.79 Brett.
The digger was in the 63-64 Econoline with the HD payload and 9" rear. It had a 3.41 first!.
Ive got all the codes for that case here, about 1 1/2 pages in Hollanders. If you need a look-up just holler.
That # on the tag is the serial, they dont use a date code.
Deciphering some of this old stuff can be fun at times.

OK Brett, I got the tag ID, its HEF-C which is from a 63 taxi with 2.79 1st. Im now wondering if the taxi only application means anything?
Have another Ford built 9 bolt toploader that is RAN- V1 which is from a 70 Econoline with the 140 I6. No ratio listed. However it is drilled for early and late patterns so should fit a Y Block OK.
Mystery solved, thanks for the kick in the pants.
