I'm trying to remove everything from the frame to clean and paint.
I'd like to remove the Saginaw steering box and steering pump off to clean and paint separately.
Should I remove it from the top of the Pitman arm (removing just the box) or at the bottom (which would remove the box and Pitman arm together).
I want to eventually do a 4" lift, but stock height for now, so no need to replace the arm. Also, I have a harmonic balancer puller, but not sure if it would work to get the Pitman arm off.
I always split the box and Pitman arm from the drag link or whatever you call the arm that is attached at the arm. Using a splitting fork or as they are known here "pickle forks" I found it easier to take off and put back on.
Also a Pitman arm puller is cheap and useful enough to just go buy one and keep it around. Always worth it and it will surprise you what you can use it for when your desperate and creatative.
The pin came out and nut came off without issue. Any tips on separating the pitman arm and draglink without a pickle fork? I've had it soaking in PB Blaster.

Tough call, they can be seriously fussy sometimes and then again i have had them fall off when just wiggled. I know from experience a large flat blade screwdriver will have you at wits end before it comes loose. your local advance discount or autozone are pretty good about loaning tools if you cant manage to get it to come off.
