I know this question has probably been posted...I am tired,
frustrated and am ready to give up....
I have tried the normal pitman arm removers to no avail
I have tried a pickle fork and it didn't budge
I ahve tried smacking the steering box stud with the puller on it
for tension and no movement.....
I am ready to slap some C4 plastic explosive on it.....
After I broke 2 cheap pullers I borrowed a SnapOn one from a friend and got it off with that. The only problem was that it didn't fit on on the truck so I had to pull the steering box out of the truck. It was tough to get off. Use heat also but try not to overheat the shaft going into the box or you'll damage it.
Go and get the biggest gear puller you can find and slap that on there. That's what I had to do when I put the lift kit on my truck and had to put a new dropped arm on. It will come off with enough torque on one of those big pullers. Good Luck.
I removed the draglink mounted on the small part of the pitman arm and left the arm on the old steering box to be returned to the dealer as a core.....
I will go out and get a new pitman arm and will be sire to add some grease to the grooves....so they don't stick....
the nut should be plenty to keep it snugged on...
so pricing for a Ford reman steering box and power steering pump $325.
not including the new hoses....I hope I can get a pitmanarm tomorrow.
too little, too late i know, but for future note....I had the exact same problem and found a trick. Get the arm puller as tight as you can, then hit the rim of the pitman arm (part on the gearbox spline) with a hammer a few times, then pull a little more on the puller, hit with the hammer, pull, hit....it will eventually come off, slowely but surely. Trust me it works, and it didn't harm the arm OR the gears, just so long as you don't accidentaly hit the splines with the hammer.
We ended up busting the pitman arm removal tool.....
we used an impact wrench to turn the drive screw on the remover...lol!!!! that thing got flung pretty good!!! and broke an old glass living room light that was sitting in the garage that I have been trying to get my mom in law to get rid of!!!! LMAO!!!
