Steering Pitman Removal

My son bought a steering box for his 1970 F-100 from a junk yard with the pitman attached. He was able to remove the original box from his truck leaving the pitman hooked to the linkage under the truck. How can the pitman be removed from the replacement box, and how can the replacement box be attached to the original pitman? Are special tools required?

Thanks

Yes there is a special tool to service the pitman arm. It is called a pitman arm puller. Do you have an Auto Zone near you? They will lend you this tool for free.

You might be better off leaving the pitman arm on the new box. Take the old one off the linkage with a pickel fork tool. If you want to take the new pitman arm off, put the puller on tight. If the arm doesn't move, tap the pitman arm where it goes around the sector shaft with a hammer. sooner or later it will break loose.

I had a heck of a time getting it off on my truck. I used a old puller with two arms. I got it as tight as I could and hit it with a hammer a few times and it popped right off. Hope this helps.
