Yes and no. They function the same, but 04+ have DLC plungers.

DLC? But they are interchangeable then. The 06 is suffering from stiction, and I've got a set of 03 so I'll clean the 03 ones and swap them out. Then clean the others.

The late style can be swapped into the early engines no issue (should be swapped as a set, but many don't)
Never heard of anyone using the early style in a late motor. DLC = Diamond Like Coating, smoother and lasts longer than the early style.
Why a set? Are they slightly a different size shot?

A little more consolidation ..........
The difference between original C94 & new C95 was internal change to clevis. Had to do with plunger suffering from side loading which then causes raw fuel to flood and enter the engine oil crankcase. Design improvements aimed at preventing scuffing.
There are no physical fitment differences between the injectors, but I would not intermingle them.
Along with the clevis re-design mentioned above (which helps prevent scuffing) one additional change below:
Change in 2004 from the 2003 design:
DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) Coated Plunger
• The injector plunger has had a DLC coating applied to it
• The coating will further increase the robustness of the injector against poor fuel quality/water intrusion and will reduce the risk of internal scuffing.
Note: This injector has different operating characteristics and can not be interchanged with non DLC injectors.
Installing the incorrect injector could cause Erratic or rough engine operation.

Something I found comparing old and new...

I remember this actually....
There was a guy on here a few years ago that picked up a 2003 Excursion for $17K when it should have sold for way more. The problem the truck was that while under warranty, one of the original C94 injectors filled a cylinder with fuel, hydrolocking the engine. As a result, it got updated to the C95 injectors, but it sat on a used car lot until he came along and bought it.

You can put the new injectors in the old engine, it is just recommended to swap them out as a set.
I'm just asking this but I've always heard about stiction but have been reading a little about it. Is it something that gets worse till the truck doesn't run or what. From what I've heard the clicking for the injectors is not as noticeable when its heating up in the morning (which mine does) and it makes it grouchy until its warm (which mine does) now I'm at 306K an mine has been grouchy probably since 140K-150K but just always passed it off as a diesel being cold natured.
