Just throwing this question out there out of my own curiosity. Why in this case was the engine unable to run? I blew a plug on my previous Ex and was in a location (on ramp to highway and concrete walls and semi surrounded) where I had no choice but to keep driving. I originally thought my exhaust fell off, loudest sound I've ever heard a vehicle make, but it ran. Most blown plug post describe the gawd awful racket but I don't think I've ever seen one where the truck just would not run. Anyone have thoughts on why this one is different? Is there another underlying issue?

And well... a little direction back on topic too.

Thats what I was curious about Cristina. I have heard of many blown plugs on here but they all seem to run yet after blowing a plug.

Shutting down and sounding like clanking doesn't sound good at all. Maybe the plug broke and some went into the cylinder causing havoc?

I would guess the racket was the loose plug bangin around while hanging from the cop. But that's just a guess. I would think it would still run though?!

I think the initial sound I heard was altered by being inside the vehicle enough to sound like physical banging/slapping. When I took a video with my phone it was immediate that it sounded like a pop of escaping gas which sent me on my way to finding the problem.

There probably was some clanking from the loose cop/plug, which would have transmitted into the cab better.

I've noticed the inside of the X is pretty decent about sound.

After I put things back in place it purred just like normal.

I've read other places if you pull the connector off the injector for that cylinder you can limp along with basically a miss. I didn't give it any gas while this went on, it sounded so awful, so I don't know what it sounds like at any real RPM.

I've even see a plug you can buy to put into the hole to quiet it up while you limp somewhere to get fixed, no idea if that works though.

It spit it again, this time at about 70mph. Luckily I knew what it was from the other time it spit it, but this time it has no threads left in the head. Time for inserts. We dig put a couple thousand miles of towing on it since it last spit, and had just run the austin-dallas round trip Friday on it.

Sure made quite a racket the last 3-4 minutes to home. Time for inserts.

swapped out the cop, and the plug (already new ones) and same behavior, runs the same with or without the cop plugged in. plug stinks to high heaven with gas when taken out, can smell it outside the vehicle in the air.

how can one check to see if the cop is getting voltage?

I did exactly that, all good, huge relief.

What I then did was notice when I was pulling the plugs off the cops for the compression test the one on my suspect cylinder was kinda floppy. I gave it a steady tug and it stretched. Turned out when the cop blew it broke both wires just behind the plug as well.

So my timesert was successful, and after I pulled the connector apart and put new pigtails on it, and put it back into the harness, the truck runs smooth!

ug, but success in the end!

Good to hear!

A broken wire was what I suspected originally until you mentioned possible metal down the cylinder.
