Noise after engine is turned off
I have a 99 250 SD with a V-10. It has only 500 miles on it now. I have noticed a loud metallic "ping" while the engine is warming up or cooling down after being turned off. It occurs about every 5 or 10 seconds. It seems to be located near the exhaust pipes before the catalytic converter. Is this normal? Is it part of the breaking in period?

It is normal. Mine pinged like crazy! I can't remember just how long it took to stop. I got used to it to the point that I didn't notice exactly when it quit. I don't even get one ping now.

Yep, mine used to do it also. I think it has to do with the exhaust pipes expanding and contracting with the heat and cold.
Just like V-10 man, I got used to it and then it stopped after a while. I believe it was around 7,000 - 8,000 mile area. My truck has the 5.4L V-8, so it does not have to do with the V-10.
