LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles commuters who dealt with traffic tie-ups, lane re-routings and warnings over gridlock-riddled weekends dubbed “Carmageddon” and “Jamzilla” have been rewarded with a new 10-mile car pool lane on northbound Interstate 405.
The California Highway Patrol says the longawaited stretch between Interstate 10 and the 101 Freeway opened before dawn Friday.
The full car pool route runs for 70 miles from southern Orange County into the San Fernando Valley, matching the existing car pool lane on the southbound side. Transit officials say that some work remains but that most of the fouryear Sepulveda Pass project is complete. The $1.1 billion in improvements also included higher-capacity on- and offramps and bridges that meet seismic standards.
