Hey guys i just recently upgraded my 351M by putting in a holley truck avenger 670 cfm carb, comp cam with lifter kit http://www.summitracing.com/parts/cc...21-3/overview/ and a edlebrock performer intake. Everything was going well, the timing is set at 8 degrees and sounds nice. But everytime i first start out in each gear it almost wants to give out so i have to keep my foot on the gas so it doesnt stall. We thought it was the jets so we upped the main jets from the 68 to 71. But it still wants to give out in the beginning of each gear. Also i had my c6 transmisson rebuilt and had the guy put a shift kit in it. And it used to downshift before i got the parts put in (like its supposed to) when i stepped on the gas. But now if I step on the gas it goes NOWHERE, it takes forever to get up to speed! Whats wrong with my truck? The guy that worked on my truck knows everything about these trucks and I know everything was put together right and tuned right. So is it something elese causing the stalling? PLEASE HELP! Much thanks!
You need to tune that new carb. You're going to have to look at the plugs and let them tell you how the truck is running. Google "plug chop" to see how to read plugs. Get the main jets squared away, then move on to accelerator pump cams and nozzles.
As far as the lack of downshifting, your guy probably didn't hook up your kick-down linkage, since the stock linkage won't bolt up to your new carb.
Any modifications (headers, intake, cam, etc) to a vehicle requires modifications from stock specs. More "cam" requires more initial timing. Bump it up to 12* - 14* then take 'er for a spin. Your motor might even like more.
Then check your total timing...you want 36* - 38* total, and all in by 2800 - 3000 RPM.
Timing first, then do the carb adjustments .....as mentioned above.
Thanks for the advice guys! But I found out that it kept stalling because the cap on the distributor was lose cause the clips weren't bent right so it kept flopping when I was driving and now it doesn't stall anymore! But I still need to put a new kick down linkage for my new carb because I think with my new rebuilt c6 tranny with a shift kit doesn't really like shifting nicely without the kick down linkage.
I looked up your carb on summits site and the photo shows that it already has the Ford kickdown lever installed. Post a photo to show us what you have.
