i just rebuilt a 400 the only after market parts that are on right now are a set of hedders, edl performer cam and lifters and a double roller timing chain. i just raced a stock cavalier and lost, my front bumper was just past his back one. im driving a 78 for with the 400 and a c6 i shift at 4500 because i cant get any higher revs out of it could it be the stock 2bbl and its not getting the gas to rev that high. i have a holly 4bbl bouble pumper 600 cfm and a edl streetmaster intake to put on when i have the time plus a stage 2 shift improver kit for the trans. and something that is buging my is that when i was racing my buddy that was watching said when i shifted to 2nd there was a puff of black smoke that came from under the truck is that ok or bad. im running it off the hedders so the exhaust comes from under the truck.
What is the CFM rating of the stock 2 bbl carb? I just ran a simulation on a 300 CFM 2bbl and it definitly runs out of air at 4000 RPM. The 4 bbl carb will really make a difference.
I use my 400 up and just over 5000. I think I had it up to 6000 or 6500 once. I usually cruise 85-90 with 4.10's just around 3900. What gearing do you have in your rear end of the truck? The right carbuerator, intake, and timing should make you happy. And the real test of a truck isnt the drags, even those they are fun, its pullin hills. I love flying past people on the highways here when theyre struggling on the incline, and im just lovin it and eatin it up.
I loved your post. I swapped a 351M for a mild 351C in my truck within a month of being SPANKED by a 4 cylinder Cavalier driven by a little twit with a mullet. While I'm sure I could school most Cavaliers now, you and I could do it a lot more convincingly with the help of a lower final drive ratio. I'm riding around with one in the 2.75 area, too and that's the next thing on my list.
