trying to figure out what I need to replace on 2000 manual shift ranger. when I switch from 4wheel high back to 2 wheel the front end unlocks but the tach and speedo show the that it is still in 4 wheel high by the speed to rpms in the different gears. Looked at it a bit and the motor turns on the transfer case when you turn the switch just don't seem to go back to 2wheel and goes into 4 wheel low just fine> it is just in 2 wheel that it seems to be acting up like usally in 2wheel the rpms are at 2000 around 64 mph in over OD now at 2000 rpms I'm going 50 the exact same speed as 4wheel high. Any help would be great
Somewhere on the transfer case there is a switch that turns those indicator lights on and off as you shift it through the gears. Sometimes these switches get gunked up because they don't get used often enough. Then when you do have an occasion to use the 4wd the switch gets stuck and the light stays on. This is what has happened to your truck.
Sometimes these switches are separate and have their own connector and sometimes they are integral to the electric shift mechanism. I'm not sure what the case is with your truck, you'll have to research it to find out. Most times you can just take them out and clean them up with contact cleaner and fix the problem without replacing anything.
Edit: Your explanation about the RPMs makes absolutely no sense. I suspect you are slightly confused about what is actually going on. There is NO difference in gear ratios to the output between 2 wheel HIGH and 4 wheel HIGH. Only in 4 wheel LOW does the output speed change in relation to the engine speed.
Hey Rockledge sorry haven't got back to you on what type of hubs they are. Haven't been able to figure that out even bought one of those Haynes repair manuals and can't find any info on them in there. Don't really know what to look for. But the hubs are locked in even in 2 wheel. But it is not knuckling when you turn so I know its switching in the transfer case like it should just the hubs aren't unlocking I think. Been so busy with work right now going 7 days a week 12 to 14 hour days so just try to figure things out for an hour or so every night
In both Ranger 4WD systems (PVH and "direct engagement"), the transfer case does the same thing: it connects/disconnects the powertrain to/from the front differential. So either the front end is "live" or it isn't.
With a PVH system, the front wheels can be "unlocked" from the front axles by virtue of the hubs. So in this system, the transfer case AND the hubs must be engaged in order to get 4WD.
You can see what a PVH hub looks like here:
If your Ranger doesn't have PVH hubs, then it uses the "direct engagement" 4WD system which means the front axles always spin with the front wheels; there is no way to "unlock" them.
