Hello everyone, introductions to come shortly, but in the mean time, can anyone quickly identify this transfer case and let me know what the shift pattern on it would be? 1977 F250, Also, what is proper procedure for engaging? As in should it be in nutral or park?, when to lock the hubs?, etc. Thanks.
(I cant post a pic??? So look at my Avatar. Is it big enough to see? I will keep trying to get in real photo)
At the very least post some pictures in your gallery so we can see it better. Do not engage the transfer case into Low unless you are stopped. If your hubs are locked in you can switch from 2 hi and 4 hi. If your hubs are not locked in you can switch from 2 hi, 4 hi, and 4 low but you have to be stopped and you will still only have rear wheel drive. It looks to me like your T-case is a New Process 205 however I cannot see it very well. If this is the case your shift pattern from front to back is as follows.
4 Low
Neutral
2 high
4 high
If you don't have the external hubs on the front wheels then I believe you have a NP203 and it is all wheel drive so throw everything I said out the window.
It has hubs on the outside front that manually need to be turned, if that helps. Should those be locked first, then go inside cab and select range I want ie 2H, N, 4H, 4L?
As I said before, if you need 4x4 you need to lock the hubs in first before engaging. The 205 is a part time transfer case. That means in 2H position only the rear shaft is spinning, therefore in order to change to 4 H you must come to a complete stop to engage, if your hubs are locked in then the front shaft is spinning and you can change from 2H to 4H on the fly (without stopping). You MUST stop when going from anything to 4L or you will grind the gears. Same with 4L to anything else, come to a complete stop.
If you are only looking for a gear reduction for steep climbing or pulling or backing but do not need 4 wheel drive you can come to a stop, engage the 4 Low on the transfer case without locking in the hubs and you now have Low range rear wheel drive.
