Trying to figure this out, still new to diesel engines. I have an 85 6.9 f250 xl. I live in so cal so weather really has no affect on her starting, she starts and purrs like a kitty. Runs and drives like a champ. I noticed one day that after I was cruisin down the road, the "glow plug"(which is my wait to start, light but it says glow plug) light went on, then off, then on again. Randomly. Some flashes last longer than others and it's very intermittent. (Go off every 20 seconds then few minutes then maybe 30 seconds). Sometimes when I turn my truck halfway on to warm up the gp's, the light wont go on, but then it'll turn on like a few seconds later all random. Also (from I found out was the glow plug relay) is a click. Two clicks to be exact, almost like an "on, off". About every 6-7 seconds. So I'll cruise thinking maybe it'll stop but even after cruisin down the highway and stopping to get fuel it's still clicking. So I'm thinking maybe a new gpr? And if it is bad, can I still drive my truck? I have a trip planned and and hoping I can drive her up instead of taking the train. (Cheaper to drive, believe it or not. AND I ordered a gp kit online just in case and thats not coming till after i leave) Thanks for all your help guys.
On the early system, 83-86, the GP controller is on the back of the D/S head, it controls the GP relay that you are hearing on the pass side fender. A few on/off cycles of the GP relay and light for a few seconds after start is normal, if it's doing it minutes after start your GP controller is going bad.
I can only recommend from personal experience either an IH or Motorcraft controller, the cheap-os fail in the ON position and fry your glow plugs.
if you have the early gp controller, it is temperature controlled, and it may be failing, does the truck run warm, and the heater work good? or does it take a long time to warm up? could be stuck thermostat, replace with the oem motor craft part only, the after market one's are junk

Heater works good and takes about 5-10 minutes to warm up depending on how long she's been off
