turbo question

so we have to trucks and they are exactly the same from what we can tell, however my turbo doesn't really kick while on my dads you can feel it punch in (as far as we know hes stock setup)....mine you can really only hear it spin up at 2k and up (it has an aftermarket wheel which seemed to help a bit) i think its throwing a code for ebpv its been awhile since i last hooked our computer up to it. there is a sensor on the turbo, could that maybe be the source of the problem? maybe the valve on the turbo is being held shut? or is there no problem at all and my turbo is just soft and quiet?

If you have the ebpv unplugged, it will always throw a code for that. There isn't a sensor on the turbo, you might be thinking of the map sensor that reads turbo performance. If the valve on the ebpv was closed, the truck would hardly run.

well i suppose i could replace the map and see what happens but wouldn't that throw a code if it was out?, also i don't think its completely closed, the code that came up if my memory serves me right said that the ebpv sensor was out of range (my memory is crap to begin with so i could be wrong) the pig tail to the sensor is on the drivers side valve cover and it doesn't connect very well its very loose and should probably be replaced.

That connection that you're referring to is the wiring to the EBPV controller on the turbo pedestal. Try unplugging that connection completely and see how the truck runs.

You can also unplug the MAP sensor's electrical connector and take it for a spin and see if that makes a difference.

If neither of these things help, I am thinking you may want to check for boost leaks unless you have a gauge on it and know you're making good pressure.

Hopefully, these will help you determine if your EBPV is open or closed during operation:

Here is a picture of the EBPV electrical connection:
