Hello All, ol'blue and I need your you help once again. Got her running nicely with the exception that she would miss fire and stumble and the engine would die on occasions. I spilled anti freeze while changing a bad thermostat.
Then I broke the vacuum advance where it mounts to the distributor. So I got another distributor pulled the broken one. After I put the #1 piston at top dead enter and made my reference marks. Getting the distributor out wasn't easy it wouldn't turn when I tried to time it. Thought the drive gear was busted was the reason it would turn. A major reason for my decision to replace and not repair.
Anyway when I put the new dizzy in it wouldn't line up with the with the with the reference marks but just beyond my marks. Thinking that the oil pump drive socket wasn't aligned so I grabbed a nut driver socket it didn't fit while I pulled it out it the socket came off and fell into the engine. It sounded like it hit the tin of the oil pan. I plan to bring it to the oil pan plug with a magnet to remove it.
Now to the meat and tators of this post.
What is the best way to align the oil pump drive tab when reinstalling a distributor?
If you are off just a little it wont mater because the distributor will turn like when you are setting the timing. Therefore you adjust whatever you lost. If you are talking about making the driveshaft sit in the middle so the distributor has room to go over it then squirt a big dollop of grease in there to hold it in the center.
Hi Bruno2, according to my reference marks (with the rear of truck being 12:00 on a clock face) and 6:00 being the front of the truck. #1 sits between 12:00 and 1:00.
However when I try to drop it in #1 will only drop between 2:00 and 3:00. Almost to 3:00.
My thinking was that it engages the distributor gear but when it makes it far enough it wasn't engaging the oil pump socket?

The reason I was asking is that my 351 W has the #1 position between 10:00 and 11:00.
If it is trying to put the dizzy in that position you might be able to take a little socket and extension to try and move the driveshaft for the oil pump, but be careful it doesn't try to pull it out when the socket comes out or you will have hell trying to get the driveshaft back in there.
Again it's not a big deal if the dizzy doesn't go right back in the same spot because the dizzy cap is adjustable. Just rotate it so that it still points at #1. However, be sure that the vacuum advance has enough room to rotate so that it can be timed right.
it a early to mid 80s 460.
I did drop a small socket. Lol. Haven't had a chance to get back to the truck. Should be under it by Monday after wook.
