Some of you have seen the two OBS trucks I picked up a couple months ago. The 96 is running fantastic and I have some parts on the way from Riffraff and should have another thread on that after the weekend.
However, its become obvious that my 97 CCLB 4X4 needs a transmission. It randomly drops out of gear and we've replaced everything electrical we can think of. I found one at a local wrecking yard for a fair (not great) price. However, it is out of a 96. According to their notes, it will only work for a 96. I have never heard anything of the sort. However, I do not claim to be an OBS know it all. Is there something different between the two that the 97 has a tranny all unto itself?
The only thing I could think of is that they are thinking of the LD 97 F250 and making sure that they don't sell it to someone looking for one of those.
Can we (or are we supposed to) assume it's an automatic? If so, have you scanned the truck for tranny codes? Much cheaper than throwing parts at it.
Correct, its an automatic. I have AE and have scanned it more than once. No codes. No flashing OD light. When I first got it, I pulled the following codes:
I replaced the VSS and the glow plug relay and cleared the codes. None of them have come back since.

Mark, I PM'd you when I first got the truck. Just for review, here is what its doing. Tranny goes into gear just fine. Shifts through the gears like an E4OD should. Sometimes when driving in OD, it will drop out of gear. I'm pretty sure it ends up in neutral. If I slow down and put the gear lever into 2nd, it will go into 2nd gear and I can accelerate and the move the lever back into Drive it will go into 3rd and then 4th like nothing ever happened. Sometimes this happens when under full throttle load, other times its part throttle cruising down the road.
I replaced the MLPS, the gear lever, and made sure the shifter assembly on the steering column is nice and tight. All connectors have been cleaned and plugged in nice and tight. Believe me, I don't want to spend the money on a trans. But I don't want to spend a couple hundred dollars on this one and then more hundreds of dollars on another tranny anyway. However, I am open to ideas. Thanks!
Well my idea has already been tried. I suspected the MLPS, but you have already replaced it. My SWAG* is now something internal, but I can't think of anything that matches these symptoms.
