Oil Cooler?

Hey I have a '97 7.3 the oil cooler is puking oil. Can it just seals and gaskets that have gone bad or can the oil cooler it's self be bad? Is there anything that can go bad in them I rather just pay $50 for gaskets then $350 for cooler. Thanks for any help.

It's possible for the cooler to go bad, the center section will crack.

It's hard to detect.

as for doing the work, its a pita, but not hard.
You can do it with the motor in.

If you do the seals and orings either get them from Ford or riffraff I've done several with the engine in and yes it's a pita but can be done, I made studs to hold it up there during reassembly from old bolts, cut the heads off and slot that end for removal with a flat screwdriver when I get the other bolts started. Stuck the last bolt in the stud hole and torqued

Not hard, mine is a 96 4x4 I unbolted the front shaft and strapped it up out of the way you got to wiggle it and turn it and it will come out. Drain as much fluid out as you can you don't want to wear it. Mine was leaking at caps, you have to clean it and look it over.

Yea I took some old bolts the same size as,the ones you take out to remove it and cut the heads off with my cutoff wheel and then cut slots in the end of the bolt remaining so I could remove it with a flatblade screwdriver after the oil cooler is installed

Hey guys, I havnt been on here in a long time, probably cause my truck has been going good for a long time. Anyway, I am finally getting around to do some maintenance stuff on the truck. Anyway, my oil cooler is leaking real bad only when it is cold. Looks like it is bolted to the block above the oil filter and just below the power steering pump. Does the cooler come out the back, and how do you get to the top bolts on the front mount? Anything else I should look for?

Well I got the cooler out, wasn't too bad. I tried it with the drive shaft still in, but that didn't work. Anyway, have a few questions, any idea out to clean the inside of the cooler, I don't think it got junk in it, but I would like to flush it somehow. I think I may just try some solvent. Also, the oil filter half, when I was cleaning it in the solvent tank, a spring and two sleeves came out. Is there more than three prices? I only found the spring and two sleeves. Thanks

I found out its the oil pressure relief valve and from what I can tell is, they made two different styles. One is held in by a snap ring and one is just held in by the block when It is bolted in place. I have the one that i held in by the block.

Yeah, should be kinda staked in there, but they do fall out sometimes.

Yeah it was staked, Ill just make sure it is in place properly when I bolt it on. Hopefully tomorrow I will have enough time to get it back together.
