It seems to me the main reason people lift the cab is to get the rear drivers side head bolt out easier. Well that's what I've heard but I was able to get it out without lifting the cab. Am I going to be able to get a stud in without lifting the cab?
Diesel Power magazine had an article a while back on doing the studs with the cab on. If I remember correctly they dented the inside of the engine compartment a little bit to give you more room.
On an 03 I helped with, we had trouble with the HVAC box on the passenger side. We ended up loosening the motor mounts and dropping it down abould 1.5 inches and it worked perfect. You can install stud with the cab on.

This is very simple. Insert the driver rear and the passenger lower 3 to be safe prior to install. Wrap a rubber band around them closest to where the bolt goes into the head twice and then wrap around a valve spring nearby.
This will prevent them from dropping into the head while maintaining clearance during head install.
(IMPORTANT NOTE. MAKE SURE THE HEAD BOLTS DO NOT PROTRUDE OUT THE BOTTOM OF THE HEAD OR YOU WILL HIT THE HEAD GASKET AND DAMAGE IT.)
I have done this method 4 times with zero issues. Hoep this helps

As far as the box is concerned. I just removed the inner cover on the A/C box. That allowed enough clearance to remove and intall heads. Keep in mind I did not remove the heads with the exhaust manifold attached. I am pretty sure it will work either way.
