I have an opportunity to buy a 302 from a 2000 explorer w/114 on it. It would be for my 94 F150. Is this a good engine for me, comp ratio, etc similar. Mine is MAF, so is this. Is the newer injection/ignition setup enough better to leave it on there and modify my intake to match it? Are the ECM's compatible or would I need the newer ECM to make it work? 8th digit is a "P", that tell anything except it's a 5.0?
Any help appreciated, my hot rod days are long behind me!
Bought the engine, straight 302-302 swap. Only question was, is it worth the trouble to keep the newer FI and/or the crank triggered ign vs my stuff on top. I got the whole harness firewall fwd and the ECU. My engine is running fine, but 253K on it. Hard to find decent used 302 here.
Tks!
I think the issue would be if those plugs that go into the firewall fit into your current firewall plugs. If not then electronic wise I think it would be better to just take your top stuff and put it on the newer 5.0.
Depends on how much work you want to do. Personally I would keep all the stock truck stuff if it's mass air. Only two things you may need to consider is the Explorer engine probably has the "P" heads which may affect your plug wires depending on what exhaust manifolds you have. The plugs are at a different angle than other SBF heads. Also I would replace the valve springs as most Explorer engines had weak springs, they are usually rated at 4500rpm and will float beyond that.
No it's not worth trying to put the OBD2 system on this motor it's vastly different and would require rewiring the whole vehicle and perhaps changing the transmission.
To put the Explorer motor in the pickup strip it bare and put the complete truck intake, distributor, accessory brackets, and wiring harness on it and bolt it in with the truck flexplate.
Tks for the help, guys!~ I had already figured on it being a "long block" & swapping all my top end over. Didn't know if the ign would work. How can I tell if my dist will mesh w/ the cam ? Is it visually different? Yes, GT40P heads, but I plan on shorty headers. I can fit them on & see if they'll work before going further, they are for my 94 F150 application.
Distributor will work, the Explorer motor has the exact same cam as the truck motor you're taking out and matter of fact the two motors are identical except for the cylinder heads.
Tks for the quick reply. Is there any market for my top end off the Explorer motor? It's complete, with all the wiring harnesses from the firewall fwd plus the ECU & the ign setup (if I can't use it).

The Explorer intake is one of the best 5.0 intakes Ford ever produced so you should be able to get something for it on the used market. Same goes for the EDIS and coil packs but probably not so much for the wiring and computer but you could throw it all together as a package anyway.
