You do use a deep socket but just to loosen it, you can't take out the gp without hitting the rockers using strickly a socket, that's why many use a piece of hose. It would work with the center reduced though.
Finally remembered to measure. From the tip of the pin on the glow plug to the socket the push rod sits in is 1.5" and to the top edge of the rocker is 2.25". Those are close approximations, and are with the valve closed.

I tries getting the piece I made into the GP hole...I didn't feel like fighting it in....the extra length caused it to contact the rocker before it dropped into the hole. The extra length was the reason.
