Greetings everyone,
I was changing the fluid in my transmission and ran into a confusing situation.
The book say 2 3/4 pints for 3 speed and 6 pints for 3 speed heavy duty.
Normally you have a drain plug and a fill plug. I'm good so far.
I put in 2 3/4" pints but its no where near coming out the fill plug. As a matter of fact if I stick my finger in I can not reach oil.
So either it takes 2 3/4 pints and fill plug hole is not relevant to the quanity of oil or its a Heavy duty and it takes 6 pints.
First, I'd ensure there are no other "fill holes," then I'd fill it 'till it runs out of the hole you are using. Next, I'd put the plug back in and drive it.
Dave, are you sure you read the book correctly or a misprint. I come from
back in the day of these things and these capcities were measured in
pounds. So it would be 2 3/4 lbs. I still have the 'cant remember the name'
pumper holds 5 gals of gear oil my father bought in the 1940s, the dial says pounds of gear oil not pints. Oh its an Alimite Co. product............
Well, I don't know if your truck is stock, but the Ford trucks for 49 had the 3 speed in the F1, and the 3 Speed HD was in the F2 - F5. Isn't the M47 equivalent to a Ford F1?
The M47 is the equivalent...... OK as a proud Mercury owner, Lets call it similar to the F1.
The shop manual that I use is for 1949-50-51 F series trucks with 1952 Supplement. It show the 3 speed heavy duty as an option on F-1,2,3,4 5 COE and Sch bus....
The manual is both a blessing and a curse..............
HD 3-sp was an option in F-1's. A picture would tell us immediately. The HD is much larger, rounder, case, mostly deeper and wider. (HD on top below. Ignore that the LD 3-sp below is a side-loader, same size as your top-loader)
This is my first attempt at entering a picture. Lets see how I do. Looks like I got it right. My guess from the info you attached, this is a 3 speed HD. What do you think?
