I can't really find this info in my shop manual. I'd like to drain and refill my transmission. I can find the drain plug but where is the fill plug? Is there a dipstick of some kind to check the level? 90wt gear oil is used?
The more I drive it the more I like it!
Refill plug shoud be on the passenger side, bout halfway up.
If it's in the truck go steal momma's turkey baster and use it to transfer thr gear oil. The correct level is when you can stick your pinkie finger in the plug hole and just touch the oil with a slight downward bend (no more than 1/4 in below the lip.)
Thanks, I wondered if there was some access inside the truck and I did not want to rip out the beautiful red **** carpet the PO had installed. It's coming out soon just not yet. I actually have a gear oil bottle and pump that is easy to use. I like turkey to much to ruin the baster! Plus I like sleeping inside.!

The usual procedure is to just keep pumping it in, until it runs out the hole and down your arm, then all over the floor while you look around for the plug...
In Bonus Built trucks, straight 140 wt oil was spec'd, apparently for mid-50's it was changed to 90 wt. I've been using 90w140 gear oil, but next time I change it I will try 85wXXX, it's a little stiff in the winter. I can only imagine what straight 140 is like in winter!
I prefer the Martini Needle, yeah, it takes longer to get it in, but since yer laying there with your legs crossed, it ain't bad.....rather relaxing. Just don't do it when it's below 40F, lol.
I know the 90 WT Gear Oil was the only thing we bought for servicing Car and Truck Standard Tranny's and Rear Ends from the 50's well into the 70's.
Then suppliers started selling the 140 wt Oil as a replacement and totally confused 99% of the Service Stations in the World, a year or so later they were selling it as 90wt/140wt Gear Oil.
Taa-Daa I'm now reconfused, but the smells the same.
I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT recommend this, but on my '74 F100 w/3 on the tree, I used a pop bottle cap (plastic) with a hole drilled through it. I'm sure your linkage is different anyhow. Have you looked at Dennis Carpenter, Mid-fifty, or LMC?
Amazed that this thread came up again. Not sure about the 53"s but on my 52 the brass rubber shifting grommets were worn out. I got some from one of the suppliers and replaced them, also lubed the numerous grease fitting in the shifting area and mine works real good. (except for the 3rd gear double clutch)
