Steering Wheel

If you put a '96 air bag "square" steering wheel on an older '93 column, would the cruise control and horn still work but just not the air bag? I like the look of the air bag wheel and I have one that is in better shape than the one on my '93 Bronco.

If you don't get a response detailing the procedure, chances are no one here has done it. Not to say it can't or hasn't been done though. If you don't have any luck here, you might want to check the F-series forum as the column setup was identical to the Bronco.

I have no significant information to offer other than the electrical diagrams between 92 and 96 are identical in all of my reference material. That doesn't mean the physical/mechanical components aren't different.

Clock spring? I put a new steering wheel on my '96 F-350 a few years ago but I don't remember a spring. Is that deeper in the column?

A clock spring isn't actually a "spring" per se. It's a spool of wire behind the steering wheel. It's what connects the horn button, air bag, and any other electric/electronic stuff on the steering wheel to the rest of the truck. Think about it: You can't just run a bunch of wires up the steering column and connect them to the steering wheel. Every time you turn the steering wheel, the wires will get all twisted and tangled up and will break pretty quickly. A clock spring connects all the electric stuff in the steering wheel to the rest of the truck, and allows you to turn the steering wheel without wires getting twisted. You'll see it as soon as you take the steering wheel off:

Oh and MillerTime: Of course the clock springs are different! Why would Ford use a clock spring that has wires for the airbag on a truck that has no airbag??

Trucks with airbags have two connectors on the clock spring: One connector just for the airbag, and the other for the horn button and cruise control buttons. The connector for the horn and cruise may or may not be the same for non-airbag trucks, I don't know.

Okay, this was the info I needed. I'm gonna try it, I bet I can make it work since I won't be hooking up the airbag.

You might want to remove the airbag before you install it.
