Compatible Steering Wheels

Hi all,

So here's a question regarding steering wheels and whether they are compatible or interchangeable between years, or which years...
I have a'72 F100 and I have realized that I probably have a steering column from a '74...as the steering wheel itself is of that type...the horn switch has buttons for cruise control, and I found a build tag on the steering pump that says SPA A, then next line 74F 19.
I have no idea how steering wheels attach but are steering wheels interchangeable from '67-'72? And if I have an earlier model, say '74 would an older steering wheel fit?
I am not a complete purist but I do think that having a button for cruise control looks too out of place on my ride.

thank you,

Binkowski

1960/63 Falcon/Comet, 1961/70 F100/250 2WD, 1966/70 F100 4WD, 1966/73 Bronco & 1967/70 F250 4WD & F350 use a 3 spoke steering wheel with either a horn button or horn ring.

These wheels were available in colors, but only the black wheel is reproduced. Bronco's use a horn ring, but it's unique.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1971/77 F100/350's & 1974/77 Bronco's use a two spoke steering wheel and vinyl horn pad that incorporates the horn switch.

Excepting 1975/77's with Speed Control, there are two different horn pads, one is black camera case finish, the other is wood grained finish (Ranger XLT & Bronco Sport).

1971/73 steering wheels were available in black-blue-green-red-tan, while 1974/77's were only available in black. Only the black wheel is reproduced.

1975/77 F100/350's with Speed Control use a different steering wheel and horn pad that incorporates the Speed Control switch.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SPA marked on ID tags: Ford/Saginaw P/S gearbox. P/S pump ID tags have an HBA prefix. 74F19 = Assembled June (F) 19, 1974 (74).

But, are you sure the tag reads SPA-A / If so, the gearbox is from a LTD, but the seal kits are the same for ALL of these gearboxes from 1965 thru 2002.

1978/79: The steering wheels, horn pads are different than 1971/77.

What are all the spline and shaft diameters on all these steering wheels? If you want to just change the wheel itself not the whole column what all year range or model choices you can use?

I have conflicting info. If I remember correctly from prolly a year ago, the "other" site thought up to 1981ish. I believe I read it in their info on putting a tilt/cruise column out od a Dent in to a Bump. I personally bought off Ebay a complete cruise steering wheel seller claimed was on a 1981. It came with the immitation brown oxen leather horn pad 1st introduced in 1983 on the Econolines. It's now on my 1968 column but looks funky. It's splines are the same count but at the wrong offset. It is bolted all the way down but externally there is about a 1/4" gap between the wheel and the shift collar it is supposed to be flush with.

If you look up the replaced part numbers for the original 1978/79 steering wheels, you will know what the 1980 and later applications are.

78/79 f series wheel was D8TZ3600B (dent #) was replaced by E4UZ3600B which was relaced by E6UZ3600A. E6UZ3600A is also the number for 83/86 F series and 80-88 E series.
1971 was the 1st year for the 2 spoke wheel. They were 71-73. The 71-73 part numbers were originally replaced by 74-77 part number. SOOOOOOO, since my 81/83 gull wing steering wheel is not fitting correctly on my 68 column, I'd have to say a Bump column has to get a steering wheel of 1977 and older. A 78/79 Dent column can have a steering wheel up to 86 F series or up to 88 E series. All of which I should have figured in the very beginning since UP TO 77 was all the same shift collar flange directly below the steering wheel. In 1978 when Ford came out with the next generation looking steering column they must have changed the offset where the splines were in the steering wheels.
Is this watcha meant Bill?

1971/73 various color wheels were replaced by the 1974/77 D4TZ-3600-A black wheel (except 1975/77's with Speed Control).

1971/72 horn pads were replaced by 1973/77 horn pads (excepting 1975/77's with Speed Control).

1978/79's use different wheels and horn pads than 1971/77.

Then, there are the myriad years specific T/S switches.

Great research you's dug up through the books guys. That's that I was looking for a list for years that should interchange. Up until 78 then they get weird because of the redesign and the shift collar gap becomes the issue right?
