.025 for '64 points?

I just swapped my points in my '64 with a manual 223 and the specs say the gap should be set at .025. Doesn't that seem big? The old points that were in there were at .011. Now she won't start at either setting. Had to give up because I'm outside.

.025 does seem wide.....is that spec from the shop manual? I would try about .015-.018. A dwell meter is your best bet for setting points. Is everything hooked up correctly? Spark at the points? If not, it could be a broken power wire where it enters the distributor.....very common problem.
If you replaced the condenser, try swapping the old one back in....new ones tend to be junk.

.025 is correct. Dwell 35-38. I've also had new condensers that were DOA, try the old one as suggested.

I've been doing points since 1965 and the last time I did mine on my 223 it wouldn't fire. When I pulled the cap off to check I had forgot to put the rotor back on

Not putting the rotor back in is a mistake I could definitely see myself making but not this time. Radke's didn't have a replacement condenser so that's not it. I'll check the power wire and hope that's not the problem 'cause that looks like a pain to fix. I just thought it odd that the old points were gapped so differently than what the specs suggest. I'll get a dwell meter too because I haven't spent enough money on this truck yet...

Not trying to be a SA, but you did set the gap with the lobe on the high side.??
Also did not hook the ground wire to the points connection? (don't ask).
Sometimes the condenser wire or the coil wire can be twisted enough so that they ground out.

Not sure what it was but this morning it's working! Now I can go to work! I think the power wire wasn't tightened enough. Now I will time it and see what happens. BTW what's a SA?

SA is Smart a$$ Glad you got it running..

As a side note: When you check your timing rev the engine to see if you are getting timing advance. 223 distributors have no mechanical advance and depend entirely on the vacuum advance and with out it the engine will be gutless and can also cause heating problems.

Thanks for confirming the correct gap. I didn't have a manual handy....
