How do i check my oil pressure sender and gauge

How do i check my oil pressure sender and gauge

Hi i have fitted a new oil pressure sender and switch but its reading 80+ i am getting oil in the rocker cover so i am not sure if its a faulty switch.This is on my 223 engine.I am learning as i go along so it will be new for me to check.Thanks a ride out in her

I would first disconnect the wire on the sender then turn key on it should
stay on zero, if not the sender wire may be frayed and touching ground somewhere....
dont run it that way it may fry the gauge..

Temporarily install a mechanical under the hood to verify pressure is the best way to check IMO.

Hi if i turn the key so the ignition lights on it reads 0 untill i start the engine so are you saying take the wire off then start the engine.Thanks

YES remember alot comes out of the box as junk:::::::just ask me the of

Here is a good diagram of the oil pressure gauge circuit. I would check to see if you have any voltage at the sender. If not follow the wire back to see if there is a break somewhere. If there is voltage just quickly ground the wire to see if the gauge moves. If it moves the gauge should be OK so the sender may be your culprit. If it doesn't then you may have a bad gauge. It usually is the sender.

Hi thank you for the picture its a great help.I have just clean the wire on the sender and all is good its working great now.I thought somethink was wrong as the engine has only done 12,000 not even run in yet but thank you

Like Dave said, hook up and check oil pressure with a mechanical gauge before tearing into the engine.
