After hanging the Tailgate on the new bed I am perplexed on where the Bumpers # BAAA-8340725 are to be located and how they are attached. All I have are two(2) elongated holes on either top side of the Gate. Are the bumpers bonded or fastened to the Gate with some kind of screw or clip? And in which direction does the bumper face? I did not have a Tailgate on the truck when I purchaced to be able to compare.it with. Thanks Jim VA.
Jim,
Am I missing something??? When you asked "does the bumper get fastened onto the Gate?", did you mean "does it get fastened to the frame rails? On my '59, there are OEM holes that the bumper braces bolt onto. They come away from the end of the truck and clear the tailgate when it's lowered. The rear bumper gets attached to the braces which are attached to the holes on the end of the frame rails on each side.
I've never heard of a rear bumper being clipped to the tailgate. But then again, there's LOTS I don't know and I seem to prove that over and over here on FTE!!!
Dayrl: I should have stated that they are the( Rubber Bumpers) that keep the tailgate from rattling! There are two of them that are suposed to attach to the upper sides of the gate somehow. Jim VA.
I don't have an answer for your question (what else is new) but I do have the illustration from the Ford Parts and Accessories Catalog for the 53-56 bed.
It doesn't show any bumpers and I'm wondering (since I haven't looked at any of my bed parts in about 4 years) if these are stock items or part of a kit you bought? On the other hand, I've been smoked for posting info from the Parts and Accessories Catalog that didn't match info from some other Ford literature so it could be an omission. At least in the books I have, Ford tended to treat the bed as this thing that really wasn't part of the truck but they had to document, at least a little. Ask Kai about documentation for the stake bed - that's almost non-existent it seems.
I have seen the tailgate bumpers in ***'s catalog and another place called Early Ford's catalog with that part number and an illustration showing them attached to the back of the tailgate, outboard edge that would close against the rear box sill. They are oriented vertically, half way between the lower hinge and the top of the tailgate. I seem to remember taking mine off before painting and have not reassembled the box yet.

Schew!... well that's a relief. For a minute there I thought I was going nucking futs!!
You have an original gate? There sould be small cuts stamped through the gate. You crimp the little tangs over just a bit with a small punch. That will hold them in there.
The gate is one that I got from Mark at F100 connection (orignial 54). The two (2) small tabs that Fenders spoke about seems to be the correct answer. The bumpers are 9/16"x9/16"x7/8"x4 5/8" a triangular shaped rubber piece part #BAAA-8340725-A.I think they will prevent a metal to metal contact between the gate and the box and keep the paint from rubbng off as well as anti rattle. I did not see on Earl's diagram, I think I bought them from Little Dearborn, at the start of this project. It has been so long ago I forgot where half of these little pieces go. Thanks to all Jim VA.
Try a test shut on your gate before you crimp. My new bumpers were very firm and needed trimmed slightly for a good gate close. They would probably break in eventually without trimming, but it appeared it would take a very long time in my case.
Jim,
Just as another reference point, I looked at mine last night and it matches what 'Fenders described. Guess I need to make a mental note to paint under those, then install them before the final exterior paint goes on.
Thanks for the answer fenders. I went to Vintage Ford yesterday and picked up a set. I installed them last night. I should point out that the curved side of each rubber goes to the outside of the tailgate. The fit on the tailgate is perfect! Thanks again, John
