DIRT INSIDE THE TAILGATE

Anybody have a fix for this...there must be a bucket of sand/dirt inside my tailgate. Rear bumper is off (being replaced) and when I drop the gate without the brackets it sounds like niagra falls in there.

Thought about drilling a series of "weep" holes on the bottom. Any thoughts?

(did search on "bodywork" board...no luck...this is 34 years of dust getting in there and accumulating, i guess)

DIRT INSIDE THE TAILGATE

I'm not too sure where you live but I had a truck that had similar problems. What was inside my tailgate wasn't dirt and sand but mine was rust. Truck I bought came from Salt Lake City, and the poor thing was rotting from the inside out. I'm didn't know what it was at first, so I took the tailgate off and banged it around and out handle which I removed poured out a cup of rust particles. If thats the case I'd suggest getting a junk yard tailgate because this one won't get any better. Good luck.

Pebbles and stuff inside your tailgate eh? I would be more likely to suspect rust particles. I have rust in all my truck tailgates.... they're all 25+ years old. I wouldn't replace your tailgate unless there are rust holes that are too large to repair. Weep holes sound like a good idea, I've seen 67-72 Ch###s with slots at the bottom to allow drainage. If you think you might have a rust problem creeping up on you dump some oil inside the tailgate (while it's off the truck) and slosh it around. Oil will keep it from rusting from the inside out. Other than that I wouldn't worry about it.... Mine's not a show truck so I can live with the noise.

Adam,

Thanks. I'm going to drill weep holes, remove the handle and try 100 lbs of air to blow it all out. Then, instead of oil, I'll use some POR 15 rust paint inside it. The exterior is great, no rust thru (yet).

DIRT INSIDE THE TAILGATE

Skip - I recently went thru the tailgate on my 64. After I got all the rust repaired I taped up all the holes in the ends where the latches and handle go and poured in a quart of POR-15. I sloshed it all around like you do when coating a gas tank. Poured out the excess and let it dry up real good before putting it all back together. Seems to be working out real good. Later,
