I have seen them glued with jb weld, corrosion on them that made like glue
Maybe a little heat will help

As Schoo mentioned, heard of owners using JB weld, or something similar, to attach handle to the shaft when the gear is worn, and I will refrain from making any derogatory comments when an owner does as not to offend any FTE member. Not sure what to do if the handle is glued to the shaft. Otherwise, suggest try giving the shaft and set screw area a shot of penetrating oil and let it set over night. If believe the shaft and handle is seized due to rust then suggest trying a mild solution of rust converter, would not let set too long. I would apply, let set few minutes, then flush, if there's a heavy rust color then repeat couple times?? If turns out it is JB weld, or similar the only way to remove is using high heat, over 600 degrees?

I had one of mine stuck and it was corrosion that had it firmly in place , I used my tie rod joint separator to put even pressure behind it and heated it up with my heat gun and after about 2 minutes of applying medium heat it popped right off

I took an extra door handle (doesnt everyone have a few laying around), took the screw out. I put the handle on and had a friend push it in as far as possible. I then took an extra long drill bit (home depot for $3) and drilled into the handle spline. Enough to set the handle screw into. Put the good handle on pushed it in all the way and tightened the screw. All is right with the world...well at least it hasn't come off.
