Guys, I am new to the forum. I have a 66 Ranger which is in good shape, rebuilt motor, front end, even steering box. However, as many of you I would like to prioritize power steering. I am thinking of going the Bendix route and think I may have found one for sale. I have not seen pictures to tell the difference from the Saginaw pump. I do have a picture of the pump thinking you guys will be able to tell just looking at it. Thanks for the help!
Sorry, typed that wrong. I realize this is the steering box not the pump. After looking at some other pictures, I don't think this is the bendix version but it would be great to have someone confirm. Thanks.
Bendix P/S: 1966/68 F100/250 2WD; 1969 F100/250 2WD before serial number D96,001.
Ford/Saginaw P/S: 1969 F100/250 2WD & F350 from serial number D96,001; 1970/79 F100/250 2WD & F350.
There really isn't is a Bendix P/S pump, the pump with the steel reservoir is essentially the same: 1965/77 Ford Passenger Cars (except 1972/77's with Hydro-Boost), 1966/77 F100/350.
Depending on the year, there are slight variations in the dipsticks, some are plastic, some are steel. The seal kit is the same for all.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1978: Ford changed the P/S pump on everything except Econolines and Passenger Cars w/Hydro-Boost-both used the Saginaw pump.
This pump is smaller in diameter, has a plastic reservoir. Since FE engines were cancelled at the end of the 1976 model run, you cannot use this 1978 and newer pump as the mounting brackets won't fit.
First and foremost Welcome to FTE: posting pic of both steering boxes, as you can see the Bendix is fat and short whereas the Saginaw ox is narrower and longer. Thus, upgrading from drums to front disc usually involves either shortening the column shaft, or both the column and shaft. If decide to keep the Bendix need to factor in if considering hedders?? Again, welcome to FTE, post pic's if and when you can, looking forward to you input!!
Thanks guys. The picture helped a good deal. I realize this then is the Saginaw version. From the research on the forum, most people like this one better anyway. Just need to shorten the steering. I will get some pictures up when I get a chance. I know we all enjoy seeing each other's projects. You guys have a lot of knowledge in the group. I appreciate the reading.
