Front Drive Shaft

My front drive shaft has rusted and deteriated so much it looks dangerous. My 97 is in good shape for a Michigan vehicle but my front drive shaft is a rusted mess. So, I'm trying to get a 02 or a 03 from a junk yard. I've called a few places and they say they're a hot item. My wife's 92 Chevy K1500 drive shaft just has surface rust, not even pitted. Wonder what the difference in the metal is. Has anyone replaced their front drive shaft because of rust.

I ahve the exact opposite problem. My driveshafts and everything underneath looks really good, and I have the surface rust under the doors and on the tailgate.
