I know not to expect much for MPG is these trucks, just want to get a feel for what I should get towing..
I usually get 11 to 12 around town and up to 15 on the highway. My old toy hauler weighed about 5,000 lbs and I was getting around 10 or 9 depending on where I was going.
Got a new toy hauler and it weighs 7,000 to 7,5000 dry. Havnt put water in it yet, just a 10 gallon jug of water and two dirt bikes with some gas cans. I am getting 7.4 MPG. I went 170 miles and the fuel light came on.
Is this to be expected? It is stock excpet for the 4" turbo back and the bullydog intake.. (I know I should use the stock one)
Any thoughts. No codes on the SGII. oil and water temp stay within 15 degrees. But its pushing it.
That's way low. My Excursion is getting 13 around town doing 90% 2-4 mile trips. Even before all the work, getting 14+ towing about 8k wasn't hard but not towing was 16-17. Now 18-19 on the road is easy. Based on 1 700+ mile rushed road trip that included about 100 miles in city traffic and 200+ on country roads I got 18.5, running pretty hard on the road. Granted, this latest is after a lot of work but prior to that my MPG was still much better to say the least.
Seems low to me as well. do they have winter mix fuel where you are? that will knock it down 1-2 mpg plus idle time to warm up its hard to figure in the winter months. If your hubs are locked in you will get less mpg as well. I get noticable lower MPG if I leave them locked in even when not using the 4wd. Is it down on performance at all?
Anything less than 13/14 I'd be looking for the reason why, The 7.5 you say you get would have to be uphill, rocky with the wind in your face pulling that kind of weight, I see people commenting on here all the time getting 13 plus pulling 5ers. just sayin'

Thanks,
I get 11.? towing my 13K fifth wheel up to the Eastern Sierras and 13.1 mpg's on the return trip. App. 300 miles each way. Takes the mileage to average the mpg's out. I set the cruise at 60 mph. Your mileage does seem low. If they're short trips all bets are off.
FICM is 48 and 11.6 on the battery when starting then goes back up, the lowest I have seen the FICM is 47 I think. I just had that and the batteries and FICM replaced in December of 12'.
I am changing oil next week, it's not time to do fuel filters yet but I will just to make sure something is going on there.
What else should I be checking?
It doesn't really run any diffrently. Just seems to be working harder to tow. I did not have the hums locked in on they way to camp last weekend but locked them when I left becuse of a small sand section, and left them locked on the way home. That took it from 8.6 to 7.4 on the way home.
I should have mentioned I have big tires and wheels on too.
I just had the axels flipped on the new hauler and they checked the breaks and bearings then and all was good. Taking it in to rotate tires today. I will aks them to check the rotors as well. Any thing else I should have them look at?
They are a 325/60R20. I know that will make a difference. I have not calibrated the speedo yet either. I heard there is a way to calibrate with the SGII anyone know if that is true?
I have had the same tires for two years and never done it, just seems like the MPG dropped significantly over the last month or so.
Oh, so they're not huge, but much bigger than stock although probably 30lbs heavier. Unless you started running them really low on psi, obviously they wouldn't have caused the MPG to just drop like that.
I was thinking you were going to say you were running 37's on 12" wheels or something.
