so I have a 93 f-250 with the 7.3 turbo diesel. the truck has a 5 speed trans full floating rear axle with 3.55 gears open diff 2wd the only rust on it id on the drivers cab corner its in great shape I traded a car for it so I realisticly have 1500 in to it only. but it needs a rear end which for the diff I want is $1000.00 with bearings and seals and the eaton carrier with 4.10 gears it has a tranny issue when I shift from a stop theres this weird noise from the tranny and it needs new door lock actuators the turbo still has a problem that it wont spool and deadlines if I floor it and I think it needs a lift pump and I wanted to put a bunch of after market stuff on it but is it worth putting money into it needing a rear end and possibly a trans and a turbo? thanks for any opinions!
That's really a call for you to make, but to make it less painless, check around for prices. If there's a pick n pull or similar yard around you you'll be able to get a rear end for under $200, or keep an eye on craigslist.
Deals on parts pop up if you're patient.
Lift pump is low in cost to buy and easy to install, that one's really not an issue to make a decision on keeping the truck or no.
ive been looking but what I hate is this truck has the speed sensor in the rear end not the tranny so the nice build rear end I had on my 90 f250 isn't compatible that one has 4.10 gears and all new stuff but it doesn't have a speed sensor in the housing and thanks for the reply!
are you sure? i picked up an '89 rear dually axle and it has the ring tone.they just used the sensor for abs back then.the abs/vss sensor works fine for my PSOM/E40D.
the srw 3.55 or 4.10 sterlings are cheap enough though.100-200$ no need to spend a grand on one. http://www.car-part.com/
yeah.your 5 speed doesn't need it,but it will make your 93's speedo/odo work.
swap her in.oh,since it's a 1st gen sterling you do need a conversion u-joint and change to the straps rather than the u-bolt style for the yoke.iv got the #'s here...........
Carquest Part #2-3050 Drive Shaft Conversion U-Joint & Moog #331-10 Yoke Strap Kit. you've already got the straps to use of course from the 90's truck.so you just need the u-joint.the yoke is slightly shorter but it slid out of my t-case's slip toke the little extra without issue.
or.......i suppose if both trucks are the same wheelbase then you could just use the 90's shaft.
Do you know if your flywheel is the original dual mass type or has it been converted to single mass? If it had an SMF kit put in you might just be hearing the gear roll over noise (amplified diesel torque spikes). There are many threads on this issue, but IMO the best solution is 50 wt ATF for big rigs. Something to check out if you were not aware of the issue. Give us some better info on the noise and we can probably give better advice. Ditto with the turbo. Is there any lateral play and/or end play to the shaft? Making any noise or just not spooling? Is the wastegate rod moving freely? Any sooty black spots indicating exhaust leaks? The factory air box is horrible as it is, so how's the filter and intake piping?
Thanks for the tips and the turbo waste gate takes to fingers to open and there was oil in the intake I did not check end play at the turbo but the noise is when I'm driving sometimes it sounds and feel si me the turbo randomly spools up and has a ton of power
Do you have a boost gauge? That would help you a lot to determine what the turbo is doing. Random power surge sounds more like air intrusion in the fuel lines than a mis-behaved turbo.
Why do you say the rear end needs rebuilt? Slop in the pinion? Mine had that, tightened up the pinion nut a little bit and have no issued to date
I tried finding a rear diff and everyone kept telling me $1000, I've found some cheaper (cheapest so far was $400) but I'm told the cab/chassis trucks have narrower frames in the rear so the perches are closer together
The clutch I believe is original but I don't know it makes a wierd noise when I shift gears and the rear end has a bunch of metal shavings in it and the gears are worn and the rest is covered in burnt gear lube sludge and the bearings make noise on the free way. The turbo just will randomly spool and have tons of power and then none

If someone replaced the clutch before you they probably went to a single mass flywheel (SMF). Could be gear roll over as stated before
That sounds like a burned up rear lol
The surging power sounds like a fueling issue, I'd suspect either lift pump or injection pump
hopefully its just the lift pump cause that's getting replaced today and the injection pump was replaced by the previous owner but I don't know if it was turned up or not. when its cold outside the truck doesn't smoke til its warmed up then as I shift It puffs out white smoke
