Rear End Options???

Well on my '94 F150 4x4, the 8.8 (3.55 open) rear end is going. The cross pin thru the carrier is breaking and there is excessive backlash and it's time to think about repairing or otherwise.

I have a few Q's here:

#1 a - how many man hours would it take to rebuild an 8.8 rear end? (I'll worry about parts later)

b - Would it be worth the money? All I want is a good working stock rear end, that doesn't do what it's doing now.

#2 - Is it worth it to buy from the local junkyard? (of course I'd do a very good inspection first!)

If anyone has any feedback it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Moose

1...Professional....2-3ish....first timer...6-7ish. Took me 10 cuz I ran into some problems and took my time and went slow.

2. If you want a working rear end...yes lol.

3. You could look into junkyard axles, but thats probably the last resort, their in a junkyard for a reason. Chances are the bearings arn't much good. To give you an idea...mine had 95k miles on it when I took it apart, and one of my carrier bearings was pretty bad (not falling apart but the race was all chewed up) and the other side was starting to go. Once metal starts running through the fluid, it trashes all of the races and bearing surfaces.

Alright, what would it be to replace the front and back diff's putting in 3.73 gears? Is the front harder than the rear?

Would it just be double the work?

Are there any other diff's that are swapable into my truck? What are the f250 rear ends like?

To change the front axle gears is different. It doesn't have a front cover, you have to take the diff off the suspension. To do so, you need to remove the axle shafts, which requires removing the hubs, rotors, calipers, and spindle. I can do this in about 2 hours, but I've done it many times. Once you get the diff down, you can change the gears, but it's a little different then the 8.8, it is slightly more difficult. I had my ARB professionally installed with 4.10 gears and it cost 600 bucks USD for installation...and he didnt have to take the diff out..I just handed it to him. I would have done it myself but, I got it done for free. Now, an ARB is a little more work than a regular carrier, so take off 100-200 bucks. I don't know what the labor rate is in Canada, but its about 65-75/hr here.

It's a little more than double the work

There isn't anything you can swap into the front with ease. The F-250 axle is a 10.25 which would bolt in and still has the speed sensor on the top. But it's an 8 lug and won't fit your rims.

Just another 8.8 31 spline out of another F-150 or bronco. The 9" will physically fit, but it doesn't have the speed sensor on the diff.

ah ha. Which means you wouldn't have a speedo right? Well could you install one? It couldn't be that hard considering that they worked in other vehicles.

no it's o.k. I'll just have to go with a bronco or f150 replacement rear end. I really can't afford to have someone do the work. It'll end up being $1000 for all the work and to me it's just not worth it.

Plus I'm sure there are a few diff's in my junkyard that are still good. Also my junkyard takes the parts apart and checks them over. I don't think they'd sell me crap. I'd make sure it's nice and tight and that it has a limited slip.

You can't simply install a sensor in the 9".

oh really. Well I wasn't thinking it was that easy. I was just thinking you could somehow someway figure out a way to install some kind of speed sensing device, that would work. Maybe it wouldn't work I dunno. It's just a thought man.

There has been people that have put 9" rears in ABS systems. I can't remember how though. Go to the fte Big Bronco forum and search. If I remember who did it I'll post it later. It isn't necesarilly a cheap way though.

Anything is possible, but it's definitely not feasibly possible.
