Rear Axle Help Needed ASAP

1996 F350 SRW e40d with 10.25" rear end.

i want to install a locker in the rear end of my 1996 F350. the locker is from my former truck 1986 F250 with 10.25" rear.

the 96 rear has ABS, the 86 rear did not. so my question is about the sensor on top of the 96 rear end. is this sensor only for ABS? or does it control other things such as the speedometer or proper e4od transmission function? the plug on the sensor is only 2 prong (has only 2 connections) so i can't imagine it controls much more than the ABS.

the sensor will stay on the axle regardless, but the locker carrier from the 86 does not have the spur (or whatever you call it) that the 96 carrier does - which is what the sensor reads.

please help - i want to install this locker this afternoon!! thanks guys.

Yes the rear axle sensor also feeds the speedo via the PSOM and the computer which controls the trans, so you must transfer the sensor ring from the stock carrier to the locker.

thanks for the quick reply. i figured it may run more than just the ABS...

so that ring can be removed from my 96 carrier and put on the 86 carrier? i thought the sensor ring was part of the carrier, but you're saying it can be removed? if thats the case, i should be good to go.

Yes it can be removed, heating the ring will aid removal and installation.

cool - just ran downstairs and took it off.

only issue is the 96 carrier has a notch cut in the housing where a tab from the speed sensor fits into. the 86 carrier does not have this notch. i don't think its a locating notch, i think its there to prevent the speed sensor gear from "free wheeling" on the carrier - which would be very unlikely but i guess it it possible. i will cut a similiar notch in the 86 carrier and should be all set.

any advice on this notch before i bust out the grinder???

Was the ring pressed onto the old carrier? Rather than pressing it on, I think I would rather have two or three holes drilled and tapped into the carrier to make sure that ring stays on.

well heres the story - the 96 carrier where the sensor ring sits is about 1/8" SMALLER diameter than the 86 carrier. so i took the 86 carrier to a machine shop and had them turn it down 1/8".

the sensor ring is a press fit. on the 96 carrier, the actual ring gear prevents the sensor ring from going off course, but there is nothing on the side opposite the ring gear - it just relies on the press fit i guess. so instead of turning down the entire flange where the sensor ring sits (which is what is done on the 96 carrier from the factory), i had them turn down just enough (.200") to fit the sensor ring and leave a step. so on one side the ring gear holds it, and on the other the step holds it. now there is no chance of it going anywhere - not that it is too likely for it to wander in the stock setup.

this is probably tough to visualize, but anyone who has removed this sensor ring knows what i am saying (if i explained it well enough).
